Fametracker is right. It's totally Johnny.

Why don't you go hold the dicks of the good ole' boys circle jerk network from whence you came? You won't find any support here, so bugger off! Surely you have better things to do than troll around on feminist blogs.
...Now to answer Cleis' question: it would have to be Johnny Depp in Edward Scissorhands. Chocolate by all other accounts. It's dissertation fuel.
Jessica
Thanks, Jessica. I deleted him, of course.
I'm thinking: why should one have to choose between Johnny Depp and chocolate? If Juliette Binoche can have them both (in Chocolat), why can't I? Now, having to choose between Juliette Binoche and Johnny Depp - that would be difficult.

Alas, both yummy
How can one ever decide?
Gold teeth glint sweetly.
Cleis and all,
How much harassment do you face from losers like s/d/itch on your blogs?
There was a guy just like s/d/itch in my grad program -- he was well funded, well published, well connected and so forth. He opened up a hotmail account in the full first and last of a feminist philosopher in my department and started sending out e-mails to people to make it seem as though his colleague has lost her mind (i.e., was a "crazy feminist"). Shortly after admitting that he was behind the e-mails, this guy dropped out of the program.
I'm wondering if this kind of harassment is a male analytic philosopher thing? His words do remind me a little of the Montreal Massacre murderer in virtual space though, so he could be a disgruntled academic hopeful of some other stripe. Maybe I flatter him too much though...
My dear friend would always wave her pinky finger and say "poor little _insert his name_" whenever we saw him in the halls because of the extent to which he was so clearly intimidated by us.
Signed,
One Hideously Happy Harpie
HHH Jessica,
Actually, this kind of thing is pretty rare, on my blog at least. Before this guy got started a few days ago, I've probably deleted three nasty comments in the two years I've been here. Bitch. Ph.D. may get more because she's more widely read. I know she gets hate mail. The bigger problem for me, since I use Moveable Type to publish, is blog spam of the "casino" and "buy Viagra" variety. I delete that stuff a few times a day.
That guy from your department sounds like a sociopath. I'm glad he's gone. But I don't think this is a male analytic philosopher thing. The crazies are pretty well-distributed among the disciplines, I find.
Posted by: Cleis at July 14, 2005 03:29 PMOh, come on. Johnny Depp is completely replaceable. All kinds of men with charisma out there. Half my male friends are sexier than Jonnny Depp.
But slabs of chocolate melting in your mouth after sips of hot tea .... that I could not live without.
Posted by: jo(e) at July 14, 2005 08:35 PMNo, I'm sorry: Johnny.
Ok, that said, I actually don't get hate mail all that much, and mostly only when I blog about the open marriage stuff. And then it's often of the sexist "advice" kind rather than straight-out hate: you know, more the "little lady, you are on the road to divorce court, so shape up now" kind of thing. Sigh.
The trolls are surprisingly few and far between. Partly this is probably b/c I am pretty happy deleting stuff and if I delete something and someone comes back to hassle me, I ban their IP immediately. I've probably got about 15-20 banned IPs in my list, but that's not as many as you'd expect. I did once see a post somewhere from someone on a child-f-ree site linking to me but advising people not to bother trolling b/c I would just ban them, since I'd already banned the linker (amusingly, not for child-free trolling, but for racist trolling--guess she was an inclusive bigot). And I recently had a really really peskky troll with a dynamic ip: I ended up banning an entire range of ip addresses and figured if I accidentally banned someone who wasn't the troll, they could just email me.
I'd say, to boil it down, I get a flat-out troll once every few weeks. Usually it's clear that they've shown up b/c someone else has linked me. And maybe once every week or two someone will show up who *just* rides the edge of pissing me off, but isn't quite trollish. Usually I'll tolerate them for a while, argue with them, and wait for them to either go away or cross a line so I can justify (in my head) banning them.
