Random Monday morning

1. Do I really want to go to a five-day festival this weekend, hours from home, camping out and so on, when it's so godawful hot and humid? My sister will be there, and I've already paid the $165.

2. Does anyone else think that these ex-gay counseling programs sound awfully titillating? Adolescents filled with angst and self-dread, cut off from the rest of the world, reading to each other aloud from journals where they record their struggles with same-sex attraction, reporting their sexual fantasies to the staff, led by an adorable ex-gay minister who's been faithful to his wife for 16 years even though he still thinks about how attractive men are...? Hot.

3. Are you dreading Kiera Knightley as Elizabeth Bennett in the new adaptation of Pride & Prejudice? No? Have you seen the preview? Her portrayal looks petulant and far too modern.

4. Is there anyone else out there who doesn't give a whit about Harry Potter? Give me John Crowley or Phillip Pullman any day.

Regarding #2, my thoughts exactly.

And I don't care about Harry Potter either.

I don't give a whit about Harry Potter. I have no interest in the movies either. Jeremy's mother is obssessed (picked up her latest copy at midnight at Safeway - ugh). She lamented to me yesterday about some character named [proper noun] who [verb], and my response was, "I don't even know who that is." lol

[Ed. note: Comment edited to obscure spoiler - Emily, you naughty girl!]

I love HP -- but I have young children and its a bonding experience to read books together.
I also adore Pullman and ambivalently allowed my then-9 year old to read it. She also loved it.
I've never even heard of Crowley - so thanks for the reference.

Crowley's wonderful. I recommend starting with Little, Big. His books aren't written for children; I doubt anyone under (an intelligent and precocious) 12 would enjoy them. But they're magical, and gorgeously written.
