Wendy Wasserstein

Feminist playwright Wendy Wasserstein has died of lymphoma at age 55. She is best known for her plays "Uncommon Women and Others," "The Heidi Chronicles," and "The Sisters Rosensweig," providing roles for some the best female actors of her generation - Meryl Streep, Joan Allen, Kate Nelligan, Glenn Close, and Dianne Wiest. She also wrote the screenplay for one of my favorite under-appreciated movies, "Object of My Affection," a paean to unconventional families.

A graduate of Mount Holyoke College, she was proudly feminist, Jewish, and fat. She is survived by her mother, her brother, one sister (the other died recently of breast cancer), and her six-year-old daughter.

Update: The NYT's obit.
